<![CDATA[Windows 10 End of Life]]> https://allthingslinux.org/blog/notices/eolwin10 2025-10-03T00:00:00.000Z From the 14th of October 2025, Windows 10 will become End of Life (EoL). This means it will no longer receive updates or support from Microsoft. This includes both security updates and feature updates. Your computer may continue to function, but it will become increasingly vulnerable to security risks and software incompatibilities over time.

Updates usually provide more features, stability, and continued software support. Windows 10 has already been stable for everyday use for almost a decade now. So why do updates matter so much to users?

Well, connecting to the internet always carries some risk. You expose your device to the wider world, and malicious actors may try to exploit that: whether through direct attacks on your system or by tricking you into giving away sensitive details.

While some risks (Such as phishing) can be avoided with awareness and caution, operating system vulnerabilities are different. They can only be addressed through official patches and updates. Without them, Windows 10 will gradually become less secure. No matter what mitigations or antivirus solutions you use, such as Windows Defender, your device will always be at a significantly higher risk of compromise.

If you never connect your device to the internet, Windows 10 can still work fine, since the external exposure is very limited. But for most people, this is a huge restriction in today's increasing digital landscape.

What are your options?

We'll break this down into Windows Options and Non-Windows Options, assuming you're keeping your current device.

As always, make sure to back up your data before making significant changes to your system. Be that the official Windows upgrade, a clean install, or switching to a different operating system entirely.

Windows Options

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11, this is the so-called "official" method, but it requires compatible hardware. You can check if your hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements here.

  2. Utilizing rufus you can create bootable drives for Windows 11 if your device does not support a direct upgrade. Please be aware that this method is not supported by Microsoft and may lead to instability or data loss.

Non-Windows Options

There are plenty of other operating systems other than Windows, with Linux being the most prominent alternative for general computing. If you are unfamiliar with any of the terminology used or want to learn more check out our Linux and FOSS wiki at atl.wiki!

In our experience, most everyday users don't need the full scope of Windows features. Many popular applications are available on Linux, or at least have strong alternatives. Tools like WINE and Bottles can also help run certain Windows apps.

Linux comes in many forms (called distributions, or “distros”), but don't let that overwhelm you. Here are some good starting points:

Linux Mint

Offers the Cinnamon, XFCE, or MATE [editions](https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php). We suggest Cinnamon if for a polished Windows-like experience or XFCE for older, less powerful generally devices predating 2012. Mint is generally considered the most user-friendly distro for beginners with extensive documentation and software support online. Mint generally has a slower stable update cycle offering older software versions than other distributions, this increases its stability and reliability for users.

Fedora Linux

The [KDE](https://fedoraproject.org/kde/) and [Workstation](https://fedoraproject.org/workstation/) editions are the primary editions of Fedora. Workstation is the more popular and stable option but KDE offers a more Windows-like experience with extra customization options. Fedora is backed by Red Hat and IBM with a large community. It updates more frequently with newer software available whilst maintaining stability, but you may need to get more familiar with Linux to utilize it fully.

Ubuntu Linux

The [GNOME](https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop) edition is the most popular and supported, but the [KDE](https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/) edition is also available for a more Windows-like experience with extra customization options. Ubuntu offers the best stability and has a large corporate backing ensuring its longevity. It has a large community and extensive documentation online. Ubuntu also has slower updates than some other distros with older software versions, but this increases its stability and reliability for users.

Summary

Any of these distributions are good options for beginners, and you can try them out without installing by using a live USB using Rufus (Windows exclusive) or the Fedora Media Writer Tool, which you can use it for any distro not just Fedora, you can see a tutorial on atl.wiki! Just select your own .iso file and get started. You also can try it out in a virtual machine using software such as VirtualBox. This will let you see how they feel on your hardware before committing to an installation.

In the end whichever option you choose it is your choice and because of the freedom of Linux you can do mostly the same on all distros, so don't worry too much about picking the "right" one. You can always try a different one if you want with no vendor or software lock-in.

Some extra clarifications about Linux

  1. You don't need to use the terminal to run Linux (though it can be handy).
  2. Most mainstream apps are available, but certain specialized software (e.g. Adobe or Office 365) may not be.
  3. Installing apps is, in our view, usually easier and faster than on Windows through provided tools.
  4. Linux often feels faster than Windows because as it has less overhead.
  5. You can install Linux alongside Windows (though the setup may feel tricky if you're new to OS installation).
  6. If you dislike forced updates, Linux gives you full control over when to update: no surprise restarts.

So, when Windows 10 reaches End of Life, you have choices. You can stick with Microsoft by moving to Windows 11, or explore the community-driven world of free and open-source software.

We invite you to join us at All Things Linux, where we can help you navigate the transition and make the most of your computing experience on our Discord server. Come say hello or find support and learn from fellow users in the #quick-support and #support-forum channels! Our community has heped many users getting started with Linux, we will continue to do so in the future. We hope to see you there!

<![CDATA[Infrastructure DDoS Report - August 2025]]> https://allthingslinux.org/blog/notices/8-25-ddos 2025-08-14T00:00:00.000Z Executive Summary

Starting on August 3rd, 2025, the All Things Linux infrastructure experienced a series of DDoS attacks that resulted in service disruptions over the following week. This incident report outlines the attack vector, our immediate response, the security improvements implemented, and lessons learned to prevent future occurrences.

Timeline of Events

Initial Attack

At roughly 8:45AM UTC on August 3rd, atl.wiki became inaccessible due to a coordinated network flood DDoS attack that overwhelmed our servers. The malicious actor initially presented themselves in our Discord server as someone attempting to help diagnose the issue, while simultaneously continuing their malicious activities against our infrastructure.

Immediate Response

The malicious user publicly disclosed that our server was directly accessible via its IP address, which they had obtained from a public database. Upon verification of this vulnerability, we immediately implemented emergency mitigations:

  • Cloudflare Security Activation: Enabled all available Cloudflare security features
  • IP Address Rotation: Rolled to a new server IP address
  • Firewall Enhancement: Increased the depth and coverage of our firewall protection
  • Service Restoration: Achieved service restoration at 11:45PM UTC after approximately 3 hours of downtime

No data integrity was compromised during this incident due to systems that were previously configured for resilience to handle infrastructure degradation.

Continued Attacks

At 8:30PM UTC on August 7th, the same malicious actor began launching waves of network flood DDoS attacks against all ATL services, lasting 15 minutes, stopping, then returning 15 minutes later. This pattern continued until 1:00AM UTC, causing intermittent service availability across our entire platform. This pattern was repeated over the following 3 days until the migration was completed. No data integrity was compromised at any point during these ongoing attacks.

Migration Begins

From the 8th of August to the 10th of August, we began the migration of services to our new distributed infrastructure to better protect against ongoing attacks. We subsequently implemented comprehensive security and anti-DDoS systems as part of our infrastructure redesign.

Migration Completion

On August 14th, we finalized all migrations and implemented extra security protocols and systems. We also gained access to Cloudflare Alexandria protection for our most critical domains, significantly enhancing our defensive capabilities against future attacks.

Root Cause Analysis

Our investigation revealed that DNS records had been improperly configured at some point, which inadvertently exposed our server's direct IP address. The malicious actor leveraged this exposed IP to flood our infrastructure with network requests, effectively creating a denial-of-service condition that prevented legitimate access to our services.

Long-term Security Improvements

Following the initial incident, we developed and began implementing a comprehensive infrastructure redesign focused on DDoS protection and service resilience:

Security Enhancements

  • Cloudflare Proxy Protection: Secured all services behind Cloudflare's proxy infrastructure
  • Multi-layered Firewall Strategy: Implemented both VPS provider firewalls and built-in server firewalls to block all non-Cloudflare traffic
  • SSH Bastion Implementation: Established secure SSH access protocols via a bastion which has been designed to provide maximum resilience to future attacks
  • Infrastructure Distribution: Migrated from a single dedicated server for atl.tools, atl.dev and atl.chat services to multiple smaller, distributed servers for improved resilience

Ongoing Challenges

During the implementation of these security measures, the same malicious actor continued launching similar network flood DDoS attacks against all of our services intermittently, which were still hosted on our main VPS during the migration period. These attacks caused intermittent service availability across our entire platform throughout the following days, prompting us to expedite our migration timeline.

Resolution and Current Status

Migration Completion

After about a week, we successfully completed migration of most of our systems to the new distributed infrastructure. However, some services remain offline to ensure they can be properly secured for the future:

  • atl.chat Services: Temporarily taken offline pending a migration to urealircd to improve security and resilience and ease upkeep of the platform.
  • Monitoring Infrastructure: Currently being restructured for improved efficiency and capability

Additional Support

We're grateful to have received access to Cloudflare Alexandria protection for our most critical domains, significantly enhancing our defensive capabilities against future attacks.

Lessons Learned and Future Prevention

This incident has strengthened our security posture and provided valuable insights:

  1. DNS Configuration Auditing: Regular reviews of DNS records to prevent IP exposure
  2. Infrastructure Segmentation: Distributed architecture provides better resilience against targeted attacks
  3. Multi-layered Defense: Combined Cloudflare protection with local firewall rules and service host provider firewalls to create robust protection
  4. Incident Response: Improved coordination between security implementation and service migration

Security Vulnerability Reporting

If in the future you find a security vulnerability in our infrastructure, we encourage you to report it responsibly. We take security very seriously and appreciate the community's help in identifying potential vulnerabilities.

Please see how to disclose vulnerabilities on our security page for more information on reporting potential issues. By following these procedures you can help us effectively respond and secure our systems against potential threats.

Acknowledgments

We extend our sincere gratitude to:

  • Our users for their patience during the extended service disruptions
  • Community members who provided advice and assistance during the incident
  • Cloudflare for their support in protecting our services through the Alexandria program

Moving Forward

We are now significantly more confident in our infrastructure's resilience against future attacks. This incident, while disruptive, has resulted in a much stronger and more secure platform for all our users. We view this experience as an opportunity to improve our security practices and better serve our community.

In the coming weeks, we will be focusing on restoring the remaining services that were temporarily taken offline during the migration, including atl.chat services and our monitoring infrastructure. These services will be brought back online with enhanced security configurations and improved Cloudflare compatibility. Additionally, we are implementing comprehensive infrastructure redundancy improvements to ensure that future incidents have minimal impact on service availability, including distributed backup systems and automated failover mechanisms.

For questions about this incident report or our security practices, please open a ticket on our Discord server for more information.

<![CDATA[atl.wiki 1.0 Release]]> https://allthingslinux.org/blog/projects/wiki-1-0 2025-08-02T00:00:00.000Z 🎉 Announcing atl.wiki 1.0 — A New Era for the Wiki

After over a year of development, refinement, and collaboration, atl.wiki 1.0 is officially here. This marks a huge milestone for the project — with better tools, clearer policies, and a stronger foundation, we're ready to serve the Linux and FOSS community better than ever before.

For those not familiar with the wiki, in May of 2024 we launched atl.wiki with the goal of providing reliable and informative resources to users of all ability levels of Linux and adjacent FOSS software. We have so far amassed 3000 edits over 200 pages from 130 users, and we welcome you to join us in growing the wiki!

✅ What's changed?

  • Full infrastructure rebuild: We reinstalled MediaWiki from scratch for a clean and maintainable setup and we moved the wiki database to its own secure server for improved resilience and security. Scott also assisted in migrating from Apache to NGINX for faster page loads and easier configuration management.

  • Short URLs implemented: We now use URLs like atl.wiki/Page_Title instead of atl.wiki/w/index.php?title=Page_Title, for a cleaner experience. This went hand in hand with improved visibility and indexing across search engines to help users discover content.

  • New homepage design: Rebuilt from the ground up to be more useful, readable, and visually appealing to give a user a better experience when first finding and using the wiki.

  • Dedicated staging wiki: Allows safe testing of config changes without impacting the live wiki. We also adopted a long-term support versions only for improved stability and security for the wiki.

  • Launched Guides section: A curated space for step-by-step tutorials and helpful walkthroughs in any topic you can think of. It's a crowd sourced guide space for authors to nerd out about their interests and share their knowledge and experience.

  • Expanded and rewritten policies: We established and wrote our extensive guidelines and policies to guide authors on how to best write content for the wiki. We also created and refined a privacy policy and disclaimer to be as transparent to users as possible about how the wiki funcitons.

  • Revamped page moderation: It helped us streamline editing while keeping quality control where it matters most. We also deployed Cloudflare Turnstile which blocks bots during signup without annoying captchas for the users.

  • User experience features added: Logged-in users get access to favorites, TOTP 2FA, and more as well as SSO which simplifies internal account management and improves staff security.

  • Established core community values: We're guided by five key principles:

    • Accuracy - factual, well-sourced content
    • Impartiality - free from bias
    • Consistency - clean, unified standards
    • Courtesy - respectful collaboration
    • Accessibility - open and usable by all

🌱 What's Next

To everyone who contributed or supported the project — thank you. Your time and effort helped shape the wiki into what it is today. We hope you've found atl.wiki useful, and we're always looking forward to welcoming new editors and readers into the community.

Here's to the future of atl.wiki, we hope to see you there with us!

<![CDATA[April 2025 Roundup]]> https://allthingslinux.org/blog/news/04-2025-roundup 2025-04-30T00:00:00.000Z Introduction

April was packed. From explosive growth to infrastructure and policy refinements, this month showcased the strength and direction of the ATL community. Here's the full breakdown.

Community Growth & Activity

We started April with 8,000 members and are closing the month at nearly 8,900, with over 500 joins in the final week alone. We’re now averaging ~20,000 messages per day and over 100 hours of voice chat daily. That’s serious engagement.

Public Recognition

Featured by Brodie Robertson

We were featured on Brodie Robertson’s channel in their latest video:
“Useful Resources Every New Linux User Needs”
Watch here

This kind of exposure helps us reach even more Linux users and strengthen the community’s presence across platforms.

Server Structure Overhaul

Channel Changes

To simplify navigation and improve usability:

  • polls → archived (Polls now go in #random)
  • wiki category → cleaned up:
    • #wiki-changelog → moved to /var/logs
    • #wiki-todolist → archived
    • #wiki-chat → moved to /home/atl/atl-wiki
    • #wiki-news → archived (Future updates will be in #announcements)
  • Access archived channels via the @/mnt/archives role
  • New onboarding option: Logs which grants public log channel access
  • New channel: #dj-booth for music bot use

Updated Channel Layout

Aimed at reducing clutter in key discussion areas:

  • #linux - strictly linux
  • #general-tech - general tech discourse
  • #off-topic - daily chatter, media, non-technical discussions
  • #random - memes, "spam", light banter

We’re hoping this helps balance the load and keep #general-tech useful and on-topic.

Wiki Guide Section - Soft Launch

We soft-launched the Wiki’s Guide section this month to prep for a full release in May. Expect detailed walkthroughs, curated resources, and user-contributed content to become easier to find and share.

This brings transparency to our activity levels and helps us understand community trends over time.

  • Tux was showcased alongside major tools like AgentGPT (33k+ GitHub stars).
