Inspiration

Invisible labor was first discussed by Arlene Kaplan Daniels in the 1980s, who described the unpaid and unseen tasks and responsibilities involved in managing a household and family. Studies have correlated these tasks to burnout, reduced time for self-care, imbalanced work-life balance, and increased pressure and expectations.

uVisible aims to make women's lives easier through its calendar-tracking system. Family members will be able to see tasks need to be done throughout the week, which aren’t always accounted for. Chores might include walking the dog, doing the dishes or dropping the kids off at soccer practice.

What it does

uVisible is a calendar service which families can use to better organize their household. It focuses on tasks historically and often disproportionately performed by women in a family unit.

How we built it

In a GitHub repository, we created a master (main) branch and four branches for the front-end application of our website. This was to organize the project so each member of our team had their own branch to work on. Then, for the back end, we used the Supabase service to create tables that store the information entered on our website. Tasks were divided evenly among the team and distributed based on skill set.

Challenges we ran into

This is the first time three of our four members have competed in a hackathon. Git commands and conflicts have been a major learning curve for most of us in the group. We also ran into issues downloading software like Node.js to our computers, which we resolved with the help of mentors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The team is proud to have successfully gone from an idea to bullet points on a document to building a full-stack website together in a limited time.

What we learned

Our team learned to become comfortable with Git commands and managing a large project with multiple people using a GitHub repository. We gained valuable experience in web development through HTML and JavaScript.

What's next for uVisible

Next uVisible wants to launch its website online for families to access, making their lives easier. With more time, we would also have created visuals for tracking tasks and a functional, dynamic app.
