Sinners (2025)

This film was described as an action horror film, and it definitely had action, but i think it was more gore than horror. Maybe it’s just me but i don’t think vampires by themselves makes something horror. Then again, i don’t consider myself a fan of the horror genre so i could easily just be wrong about that.
This film is good, which is to be expected given that it was nominated for a million awards. But i don’t think it was that good. Again, this is mostly because it wasn’t my kind of film. It had some really good moments, but the amount of gore turned me off it somewhat.
The first time Sammie started playing music, i did actually cry. I don’t know why i found it so moving, but it was nice to have some kind of poignancy in a film that was mostly little jokes and big violence. Although the scenes of explicit poignancy were few and far between, there was a general air of the feeling throughout the whole film, mostly as a result of a cast of absolutely excellent actors who knew exactly who they were supposed to be playing, and did a really good job at it.
Of course, i can’t help but complain about the length. The film is 137 minutes long, and the first hour or so of film is all set-up. Admittedly it’s good, deep setup, but 137 minutes is a long time and i think that thirty minutes or so could have been easily shaved off here and there without losing anything of real value.
But ultimately i’m really happy that an original, good film has been released, and that lots of people are excited about it. Sinners has high production values, and we live in a world where people care about that. I hope that its success encourages more directors to work on projects that are a bit weird or experimental and are not related to existing ips that have already been milked totally dry. And i really hope the lesson learnt isn’t just to make more vampire films. And i really really hope this film doesn’t get turned into a franchise.
If you have a strong stomach and a lot of free time, it’s worth a watch.
